“What do you actually do in your tent, alone in the middle of nowhere?”
This is a question that I am often asked about wild camping, especially in the winter months, when daylight hours are limited.
In general, I´m quite content to just “switch off” and enjoy the solitude in a peaceful, natural environment.
I don´t necessarily need things to do, as the time can pass quite easily when you are doing what you love…

Prefer staying in a campsite? Check these out…
I set up my tent, get comfortable, and prepare something to eat while watching the sky as it changes colour.
I love looking down on the world, and seeing the farm houses (unseen during the day) appear as dots of light on the landscape.
I like to try and identify the mountains in the distance, and small towns as they light up at night.
I get very excited if I see or hear some wildlife, and I will investigate further!
Before it gets dark, I put up my fairy lights, and after dinner, I make a flask of tea and read a book.
After hiking to a camping spot carrying my camping gear, I am usually pretty tired and fall asleep earlier in my tent than I would at home.
I usually keep my tent door open so that I can fall asleep while watching the sky.
Occasionally I do take things to do an activity while I am in my tent, wild camping.
I have previously passed the time, sitting inside or outside of my tent:
In the summer, I have spent long evenings sunbathing on my inflatable mattress, or camped near mountain water and gone swimming.
During multi-day trips, I have plenty of things to do because I spend more time on personal hygiene and route planning. I might also need to repair or amend some gear for the remainer of the trip.
I also like to incorporate some Geocaching into my adventures!
Since beginning this Wild Child Costa Blanca blog, I now sometimes spend time editing photos, and making notes in my phone. However, I try to minimise my screen time when enjoying the great outdoors.
Sometimes, I go bike camping, where I wild camp between long cycles.

Things to do together with your friends could include:
Whether you are alone or with friends, an ideal time to go wild camping is during key astrological events, such as a meteor showers, supermoons, solstices, equinoxes and eclipses.
These events are easily enjoyed in Spain, where the sky is usually cloud-free.
You can learn alll about astronomy here.
A full moon lights up the landscape and creates a magical atmosphere.
When there is less moonlight, you can see shooting stars, gaze at the milky way stretching across the sky, and look for constellations.
However, the Perseid meteor shower is the highlight of the year. This is the most active and brightest meteor shower, peaking on 12th-13th August 2026. So, the likelihood of seeing brilliant falling stars is much higher than any other time.
So, add these key dates to your calendar, and get your list of things to do ready for your next wild camping trip.
I hope that this of things to do has inspired you to get out there…Happy wild camping!
